Shane Kim Confirms Marvel MMO Cancellation

Last year, back in November, rumors surfaced that Cryptic Studios’ upcoming Marvel MMO had hit “hit serious, potentially stalling, development troubles.”

Given that we hadn’t heard any new information on the title since the rumors surfaced, it was pretty safe to assume it was canned. And canned it is. In an interview conducted by MTV’s Stephen Totilo, Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim confirmed that the title is indeed canceled.

I’ll confirm. Marvel and we have agreed to end development on the MMO. It was an amicable decision…. It’s just something that we felt that, for us and for them, it would be better if we ended development. Which is disappointing, because that had a lot of promise. But sometimes you have to make these decisions.

Why was it canceled? Microsoft just doesn’t have much faith in the MMO business model, with Kim noting that “if you really look at the data there’s basically one that’s successful and everything else wouldn’t meet our [Microsoft’s] level or definition of commercial success.” We assume he means World of Warcraft.
