Rumor: PS4 Codenamed Orbis, Slated for 2013 Debut, Blocks Used Games

Gaming blog Kotaku is running a rumor that claims the next-generation of console hardware from Sony is codenamed Orbis. It’s reportedly due for a holiday 2013 debut and will include measures to block the sale of used games.

While it’s unclear if ‘Orbis’ will be used as a final name for the product, it is an actual codename — this can be verified by the web address orbis.scedev.net, which carries a valid DNS entry on Sony’s developer relations site. Other queries, like ps4.scedev.net, lead nowhere. You may recall that the PS Vita name was uncovered in a similar manner.

The site’s source claims the next PlayStation will sport a 64-bit AMD CPU, along with a custom AMD GPU based on its Southern Islands architecture, which powers the HD7900 family of cards. Additionally, in what is obviously an attempt to curb used game sales, titles bought via retail will be tied to your PSN account and offline activation won’t be an option. Details are iffy beyond that, though secondhand discs may not be made redundant entirely. It’s possible that if an activation key is already used, the game could default to a trial mode state, requiring players to purchase an ‘online pass’ equivalent.

Sony, for its part, has given no indication that a PS3 successor will be shown off at E3 this year. Numerous execs at the company have said it will likely be the last to emerge with next-gen hardware.
