by Mike Bendel on January 27, 2011 @ 12:52 am

Following up on the initial announcement of its PSP successor, Sony has sent over a fresh batch of high-res photos of the OLED-touting, dual analog device. For a complete lowdown on the specifications, hit up our previous NGP (PSP2) article. Otherwise, to indulge in some sightseeing, hit the break.

Yes, that holiday 2011 release target seems so very far away right now.

Hellcat says:

 sexy little beast....

eldiablov says:

Very, very impressive.

KezraPlanes says:

Seems like Sony has got it right this time around...

Backwards compability might seal the deal for me should the price be right

slicer4ever says:

assuming it's anything like the psp NA release date compared to the JP release date, we won't see it until next year's march=-(

damn, i want this today=-)

Spiros says:

Beautiful, those analog sticks look like actual analog sticks and not the nub we had with the psp, amazing, everything about this thing is impressive.

Ray says:

Am so happy they didnt go with the slide style, this looks amazing, i cant wait to have 1 already ^_^

Riorio99 says:

Am I the only person who thinks that this thing is ugly? I just really, really hate it. I'll probably still buy one, but that doesn't stop it being a horrid looking thing.

FrozenIpaq says:

Don't think it's the prettiest thing in the world but it's got a certain appeal to it that I like. Can't make everything look nice, especially with all that it's packing.

webnapster says:

I hope this is no the final design, I don't like it...

how am I suppose to play my UMDs in this? are they going to give us a tool to back up our UMDs to memory stick so we can play them ? or it is SONY giving free digital copies of the game we already own?

lol

Ecko says:

The thing is hideous. Where the designers high when they designed this thing?

It looks bulky and over sized. How are we supposed to take this anywhere without your girlfriends purse?

And with those specs, I better be able to play all my favorite media files (.mkv) with no hassle.

Battery life? It's going to be horrible.

You convinced me once Sony, but can you do it again?

Spiros says:

Dude, they didn't do it for the PSPGO why would they do it for the "PSP2" (or should I say NGP), this is a whole new handheld, they are making it backwards compatible, but it won't have a UMD slot so that will only be for games on your PSN account. If you still wanna play your UMDs do it on your PSP, the things only just been announced anyway.

Note: I'm in love with this thing, so I will fight any naysayers to the death!

Aren't you excited about the possibilities this thing offers? It's a beast, so what if it's slightly bigger, you'll have more fun playing this thing (I would assume), so I don't think the slightly bigger size or it not being the prettiest device should take away from it being an incredible platform for gaming with a huge potential.

impulse says:

I want it now... : )

So beautiful looking, and spec wise... very nice.

I do wonder if I will have to import to NA or if they will release in all territories at once... hmm.

Bizarre says:

When do price details get released?

Seth says:

Nope but most people thing they will tell us the price around e3

FrozenIpaq says:

Would probably see it closer to TGS actually, E3 is a bit earlier for them to announce a price

angelsniper45 says:

Is that what the OS is gonna look like? I hope not, looks ugly with the oversized buttons. Hopefully it'll just be a new fw with model specific features. Other than that, looks amazing. Hopefully this will revive the psp scene.

Zero says:

Don't know what's up with you guys but that think looks damn good.

KezraPlanes says:

You reffering to the OS or the console?

angelsniper45 says:

The OS. The console itself looks good but....

Dan says:

The OS is ugly as fuck, I don't know how anybody can think that UI looks nice; it's just a rainbow of bubbles and nightmares.

Zero says:

The console, and I agree with Dan, the OS looks like a quick photoshop draft.

Spiros says:

It probably was, I doubt they'll stick with that GUI for very long. Hopefully they'll take a second and read what people are saying and change it before launch.

slicer4ever says:

i imagine we'll see a much better revision of the ui at E3, it's probably one of the first revision's that we're seeing

FrozenIpaq says:

Well the name isn't final and the hardware is being toted as "prototype" so that's certainly a possibility (just like the original Nintendo DS)

Nader says:

I think I'll wait for the SLIM version... This one is way too fat/bulky.

Adiuvo says:

Personally I've always liked a bit of bulk. They usually weigh more and that to me makes it feel less cheap.

PR0fessor Burnt says:

also then you can actually grip it in your hands.

Robby says:

Yeah for a handheld, I would like it to have a little weight. Makes it more comfortable to hold plus easier to grip. And the bulkiness makes it seem more high tech.

Spiros says:

It's the same for me, I've always much preferred the feel of the original phat PSP to the slim.

Bran says:

I like the slim better...

plutoniumrings says:

I would have to say, Nice Design. Sony may still be in the Console Wars yet via Handheld. I do admit the PSPGo was a total disasterly and Epic fail on their part. With no UMD drive, it was a terrible deal for all us PSP owners. Will we be able to register our games so we can download them to the new NPG??? Will the final design have a UMD drive? I hope so because I dont want to re-buy all of my games just so I can play them on the NPG. Honestly, I would be pissed if I had to spend $20-50 again. And I only enjoy a few of them at that. Sony, do not dissapoint us or we will fall to Microshaft for our next enjoyment factor.

x3sphere says:

Welcome to the site, plutoniumrings.

Sony has stated that the NGP will not have a UMD drive of any sort. Seems the only way to play PSP titles is to douple dip on PSN.

To be honest, backwards compatibility isn't crucial to me. If it's there that's icing on the cake. I'm going to buy a new handheld to play new games, not old ones.

Dan says:

Just thought that with 4G cropping up in the market, perhaps Sony will do a 4G model at some point?

FrozenIpaq says:

Highly doubt that, 3G is sufficient technology to handle what they want

slicer4ever says:

i'm sure as the years go on, and 4G becomes more prominent, an updated model well likely follow

Josey Wales says:

Guess you guys havent heard about that 5G network yet, its all the rage.

Bran says:

I've never really used 3G so I'm not familiar with what kind of latency it gets, or if it's particularly lossy. I imagine it would suck depending on your location and how much you are moving. Seems like switching between towers would cause a lot of packets to get lost.

MenaceInc says:

I tend to get about 300ms ping over 3g to servers I get about 40ms ping over DSL with.

slicer4ever says:

i actually get ~200ms ping to servers

Bran says:

So yeah, the latency sucks.

slicer4ever says:

i wasn't calling you out on it, just telling you what i get on at&t's 3g network, basically trying to say that the latency and speed's can very based on who's the isp anywho:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1230062452.png

@Bran, 1/5th of a second really isn't that noticable, i can own people in halo, or cod, without noticing any lag on my end(although i do sometimes get lag spikes of over 2k ms ping times)

Robby says:

I have Verizon and just did a speed test and got 120ms

http://speedtest.net/android/42269138.png

I guess ISP and location will play a big part.
