Update: Photos have gone live.

Putting an end to rampant speculation, Sony today formally announced the PSP2 at its Japan-based press event. It’s codenamed NGP, short for Next Generation Portable.

The handheld boasts an impressive set of specs — including a quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU, 5 inch OLED display, 3G and GPS, front and rear touchpad. Even more impressive, that sexy OLED display is 4 times the resolution of the current PSP, clocking in at a crisp 960×544. OLED allows for inky blacks, perfect viewing angles, and CRT-like response times. Expect the NGP to stir up competition in the PMP space.

The NGP is no slouch in the media department, either, sporting cameras positioned at the front and rear of the device. Additionally, Sony is ditching UMD this time around in favor of a flash-based memory card solution. Say goodbye to load times!

For those that want to dig up their backcatalog on a shiny new portable, the NGP is backwards compatible with all digital PSP offerings. “NGP will be able to play PSP titles, minis, PS one classics, video and comics from the PlayStation Store,” reads the press release.

NGP is due for a release this holiday season in Japan. No word on pricing, unfortunately, looks like we’ll have to wait it out till E3 for further details on that.
