World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Shifts 3.3 Million In 24 Hours

Momentum is at an all-time high for Blizzard’s vastly popular World of Warcraft franchise, with the company announcing today that it sold through 3.3 million units of the recently released Cataclysm in a mere 24 hours. That eclipses the previous record set by Wrath of the Lich King, thereby making it the fastest selling PC game of all time.

The run-up to launch generated a hefty amount of hype, with Blizzard noting that more than 10,000 stores participated in midnight launch events. Additionally, approximately 15,000 fans attended official launch events across the regions of US, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, UK, and Taiwan.

The WoW subscriber base rose to a staggering 12 million last October. If previous expansion launches are any indication, Cataclysm is poised to bring a significant uptick in that regard as well.
