World of Warcraft Subscriber Base Reaches 12 Million

Blizzard’s massive MMORPG that needs no introduction continues to grow, having announced today that an excess of 12 million subscribers have entered the fray. While that’s a nice bump from the 11.5 million reported previously, it’s taken quite some time to reach this point — nearly 2 years, to be exact.
One could attribute the sluggish rise in subscribers due to China’s strict policies, which forced Blizzard to momentarily shut down operations in the territory to comply.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm drops in December, marking the release of third official WoW expansion. Expect its debut to ignite interest and by extension drive up subscriber rates. It’ll be interesting to see how much of an impact it has, short-term and long-term.
