Rumor: PSP2 Devkit Spy Shots Emerge

by Mike Bendel on November 17, 2010 @ 12:01 pm

The chaps over at VG247 have obtained snapshots of what is purportedly an early PSP2 devkit. The photo, as shown above, is horrendously grainy. Still, it gives a first glimpse at the PSPgo-like form factor and confirms earlier rumors that the handheld boasts dual analog sticks, something PSP owners have been yearning for half a decade now.

Also depicted is a rear trackpad. It’s a flat smooth surface on the back that tracks movement, translated to on-screen motions. Not exactly picturesque, but the placement falls in line with previous rumors.

Keep in mind this is an early revision of the design. The site’s source says later kit builds are comprised of a “single, non-sliding block,” akin to the PSP-1000. Photos of those have not emerged yet.

Last month, Sony ceased production of DTP-T2000A and DTP-H2500A PSP dev hardware, suggesting that it is diverting dev attention away from its current-gen platform. A lack of PSP software releases this year is also telling of a shift in priorities. E3 2011 reveal? Let’s hope.

FrozenIpaq says:

Been holding onto these details but since most details are already emerging, here are details acquired about the PSP2 (rumors):

PSP2 Details:

1) Dual Analogs

2) Rear camera, potentially 3D capable

3) Built-in GPS

4) Higher resolution screen (potentially greater than 800x480)

5) Potential PS3 game playability with scaled-down resolution

6) Temperature and Pulse sensors on back of device

7) Gyro and accelermoeter (similar to PS Moves)

8) New Analogs work differently - concaved in the device?

9) L1/L2/L3 buttons

9.5) Analogs (Shoulders) split so you can hit outside one with the second segment of your finger and inside one with your first segment

Dual analogue is all I care about.

Please explain this better. I'm really confused by what you mean.

FrozenIpaq says:

I'm confused by it as well but without pictures it was hard to understand when I was told. I would assume instead of having the buttons in a vertical position like the dualshock they would be in a horizontal position, right next to each other.

Bran says:

Oh, you mean the shoulder buttons? I understand now.

---------- Post added at 02:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:59 PM ----------

I had an old Madcatz controller like that. Was made to look like and NES controller. The shoulder buttons were like toggles, The outside was L1/R1 and the inside was L2/R2.

FrozenIpaq says:

Yeah, although the details I got are over a month old (when I originally got them). Don't take them too seriously but the down-scaled PS3 games seems interesting

Deathrow says:

Looks pretty interesting I suppose....

Sony just needs to come out of the closet with this thing..

Bran says:

I'd be happy if it was just better remote play support.

BlackSheep says:

Im pretty sure the psp2 will have a touch screen.

FrozenIpaq says:

Was rumored to have one well over a year ago now but I haven't heard another peep about it since

Hellcat says:

PSP2 will have touch sensitive controlls.

However, that pic shows exactely.... uhm.... "nothing"?

C'mon every $10 mobile phone cam could've taken a better one....

Mock up that was featured in PSM3 magazine, looks nice.

FrozenIpaq says:

Seems like that mock-up was just based off of the leaked PSP2 dev kit images that VG-247 acquired

Dan says:

Yeah it is, according to TechRadar. I wouldn't mind if the final product looked like that though.

slicer4ever says:

that is one sexy looking psp, hope it's fairly close to w/e sony has made
