Microsoft: 39 Million Xbox 360 Consoles Sold, 20 Million Live Users

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Entertainment Division President Robbie Bach revealed a tantalizing statistic at its CES presser today, highlighting the key fact that 39 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. Out of the entire install base, 20 million have connected to Xbox Live. While a complete breakdown of tiers was not given, that figure factors in all subscribers, whether Gold or Silver.

You have to admit, the number of total Live users seems a tad on the low side when considering the Xbox 360′s online component is arguably one of its fundamental strengths. Still, it’s nothing to scoff at considering this is essentially the first generation of consoles that shipped with online experiences right out of the box.

The Gamertag rate (or lack thereof) per 360's sold doesn't surprise me one bit.

I know several people who currently do not have their original xbox 360 still, and some are even on their third. The quality is staggeringly cheap for the xbox 360's.. I myself have to buy myself another because of red ring/disc drive errors.

I am still on my first console's (XBOX360, PS3 & PSP).

Yeah me too had the red ring of death in Xbox 360 cause i live in a tropical country the technitian said "You must play it in a well airconditioned room." enough said they could not even revive my dead Xbox 360 i mean they didn't even think about the people living near the equators!
