WiiWare: Downloadable Wii Games Confirmed

There’s oodles of original content on Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live. But Nintendo? All this time they’ve just had retro Virtual Console titles on the Wii Shop Channel.
That is, until now. Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal has revealed to us that Nintendo will be officially announcing its plans for the new WiiWare service later on today. Unlike the retro classics available on the Wii Virtual Console, the WiiWare service will be packed with original content offerings.
Even more interesting is that Nintendo won’t just have the big wigs like Ubisoft and Sega signing up to develop titles for the WiiWare service, they’ll also have indie developers sign on board as well. Shorter, original, more creative games from small teams with big ideas is the focus here.
The first titles are expected to hit the service next year. Look for an official announcement in the morning.
Update: Nintendo has sent in the official press release.
