Rein: No Money In Making Engines For Wii

Posted by x3sphere at October 5, 2007, 10:58 am

Released back in November of last year, Gears of War is still one of the most impressive looking “next-gen” titles out there. Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 technology will soon once again show its prowess with the release of Unreal Tournament III, but is there a chance of the engine being scaled back for Wii?

Rein says no, in fact he doesn’t think there is a lot of money in making engines for the Wii as the big money will be made later on down the road on PlayStation 3 and right now, the Xbox 360.

I don’t think there’s a lot of money on making engines for the Wii… because the big software dollars right now are being earned on Xbox 360 and they’re going to be earned on PlayStation 3, and I think unless you’re going to sell your engine to Nintendo, you’re going for scraps on that platform.

hmm....after seeing the specs of the PC version of UT3 i think the wii could handle something like it....

"Going for scraps..."? Yeah, I can agree with that. Nintendo's so into their systems being supported by 1st party games that they tend to screw third party developers over. That doesn't stop third party developers as a whole from making great games for their systems, but it does make some developers turn away.
All three sides of the 'next gen' war screw people over, though. Sony's screwing their customers, and themselves. That's not exactly a smart move in regards to profit.
Microsoft? Well, ok, Microsoft doesn't exactly screw anybody. You either like FPS games or you don't. If you're of the latter half and you bought a 360, then you've either screwed yourself or you're rich.

Nintendo, strongly supported by 1st party games???? what about all those other games... wait most kinda suck.... Still there is money to be made on the wii, since it is still, the #1 selling console. Way the 360 is pushing sales with the release of it's flagship game "HALO". All the Wii needs is more 3rd party programmers making games that aren't really bad ports of other games.
