Looks like another console MMO just bit the dust. Developer Cryptic Studios has nixed plans for a console version of its upcoming superhero MMO Champions Online, despite being originally scheduled for a release on PC and Xbox 360. According to a forum post penned by company COO Jack Emmert, all attention remains locked on the PC, going as far to note that “there are no current plans for a console version of Champions.”

100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions.

No current plans means a console version still looms as a possibility down the road. Judging from Emmert’s tone, though, things aren’t looking hopeful.

Homebrew developer Uberjack returns with an update to SMS Plus for PSP, which seamlessly doubles as a Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator. The latest release, version 1.2.5, features several enhancements, including rapid fire capabilities and support for taking direct-feed snapshots within the file browser. Additionally, when switching between games, the most recent save state will now be automatically selected.

The full changelog can be found past the break.

* When switching games, latest save state will be automatically highlighted
* Rapid fire support – map any button to A or B autofire (‘Controls’ tab). Change the rate of autofire in the ‘Options’ tab
Homebrew developer Akop Karapetyan, otherwise known as Uberjack, has released a maintenance update to fMSX, an MSX series emulator for the PSP that supports both MSX and MSX2 cartridge files.

Version 3.5.3 includes a single bug fix and an additional feature which saves ROM type settings between loading sessions, as detailed in the changelog provided below.

* Games/applications that require MSX Audio/MSX Music will no longer crash the emulator if either is disabled in System settings – there will simply be no Y2413/YM8950 audio (PSG and SCC will still render as usual, however)
* ROM type settings are now saved between sessions – up to 500 different ROM’s can be tracked by CRC32 value. This adds a slight loading delay when the emulator starts up, as well as a saving delay when the emulator exits (if any changes are made during the session)

The author notes that the aforementioned feature is still experimental and is welcoming any feedback that users may have.

Previous versions of the emulator contained two mislabeled configuration settings. In the updated release, both MSX Music and MSX Audio now correctly refer to FMPAC/YM2413 and Y8950, respectively. As such, the author notes that users should make sure that MSX Music is enabled if FMPAC-based titles were previously freezing.

After a well deserved hiatus, homebrew developer Uberjack returns with an update to fMSX PSP, an MSX series emulator for the PSP that supports both MSX and MSX2 cartridge files.

Version 3.5.1 is a full-fledged port of the latest official fMSX distribution and fixes a couple of important issues regarding audio output. The complete changelog is outlined, in detail, below.

* PSP version brought up to par with Marat’s official version
* Sound should now function correctly following a state load (in previous versions, sound would often stop)
* MSX MUSIC bug fixed – FMPAC should now be loaded correctly (earlier versions attempted loading from an incorrect location, and thus failed)
* When switching games, latest save state will be automatically highlighted

Homebrew developer Uberjack has ported Ulrich Doewich’s original Amstrad CPC emulator Caprice32 to PSP. The PSP port is written in C/C++ and uses GU (Graphical Utility toolkit) for rendering.

Caprice32 4.2.0.0 is the latest addition to the collection of emulators. It’s an Amstrad CPC emulator, and is my second choice for a port. My initial attempt was to port Arnold, which is a (arguably) more accurate emulator, but due to its poor performance on the PSP (~15 fps), the idea was scrapped.

Caprice32 is a lot faster, though the rendering subsystem used in the current version is from version 4.1.0, for performance reasons. If/when the renderer is optimized, the PSP port will be updated to reflect the change.

Current version is also missing ZIP file support – this will be implemented if enough people express interest.

Although not the first MSX emulator for PSP, it’s nice to see another developer taking up the challenge. MSX is a computer game system that was home to many classics back in the 1980s, most notably Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and Vampire Killer.
