PSFreedom PS3 Hack Graces iPhone, iPod Touch

Posted by Mike Bendel on September 10, 2010 @ 5:13 pm

Courtesy of homebrew developer NTAuthority, you can now use your iPhone and iPod Touch to hack the PS3. The PSFreedom codebase has been ported over, with one not-so-small caveat: it only works on 2G and 3G iPhone models and 1G revisions of the Touch.

Additionally, as this is considered a preliminary release, there’s a little bit of manual labor involved in setting things up, as noted in the supplied readme. Nothing terribly daunting, though: more »

DMCA Exemptions Legalize Phone Jailbreaking, DRM Circumvention Under Fair Use

Posted by Mike Bendel on July 26, 2010 @ 4:43 pm

The Librarian of Congress has issued a statement detailing six key exemptions to Digital Millennium Copyright Act — DMCA for short — effectively legalizing the practice of “jailbreaking” mobile phone devices and circumventing select DRM routines under fair use policies — including stripping away CSS protection on commercial DVDs.

While many of these activities were once considered a grey area, they are now fully sanctioned under the DMCA. That is, if your intentions are just. For an overview of the amendments made herein, look below. more »

George Hotz Bows Out Of iPhone, PS3 Hacking Scene

Posted by Mike Bendel on July 13, 2010 @ 9:12 pm

Famed iPhone hacker George “GeoHot” Hotz — father of the widely-used jailbreak hack — has thrown in the towel. Hotz delivered the news of his departure on his now-defunct Twitter account earlier today, noting that “It was a cool ride, and I’ve learned a lot about a lot. Perhaps one of these days i’ll do a more formal goodbye.”

Apart from his well-publicized stint with hacking the iPhone, Hotz also dabbled in the PS3 hacking scene. His efforts eventually prompted Sony to remove OtherOS functionality from non-slimline units, nixing the ability to run third-party operating systems such as Linux.

Hotz later promised to bring back OtherOS through circumvention of the PS3′s security system. While the feat was teased in a YouTube video last April, it never materialized.

Hotz gave insight into the motivating factor behind his sudden exit in a blog post earlier today. The site itself has since been taken offline — at least for public viewing. more »

George Hotz Makes His PS3 Exploit Public

Posted by Mike Bendel on January 26, 2010 @ 6:24 pm

George Hotz, the man behind the infamous jailbreak hack for iPhone,  has released his PS3 exploit to the public.  Still very primitive, it takes advantage of OtherOS, granting unrestricted access to system memory. It was specifically tested on firmware 2.42, but Hotz notes that it should work on all system software revisions to date. That said, it isn’t geared towards end users and likewise, is far from ready for prime time. At the very least, you could call it a start.

Seeing as Sony nixed OtherOS support on slimline models, this achievement means little for new PS3 owners. However, if history is any indication, further research obtained from Hotz’s research could very well lead to opening more doors. Time will tell. Hotz, for his part, is bowing out of the scene in hopes that others will pick up from where he left off, noting that “I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.”

Geohot Touts PS3 Hack

Posted by Mike Bendel on January 22, 2010 @ 7:23 pm

While the PS3′s defenses against unauthorized code have remained impenetrable up until now, hacker Geohot of iPhone fame claims he is the first to discover an exploit, a feat that will no doubt garner the attention of Sony. In a post on his personal blog, Geohot touts that he has managed to outsmart the PS3′s privileged-based hypervisor security system and gain “read/write access to the entire system memory” in addition to “HV level access to the processor.” more »
