Nintendo 3DS eShop, DSiWare Transfers Due In May

Posted by Mike Bendel on January 31, 2011 @ 7:59 am

As revealed earlier this month, some of the more integral aspects to the 3DS’ online experience – such as the eShop and built-in browser – will arrive post-launch. In a recent financial results briefing, company president Satoru Iwata gave a timeframe for the eventual rollout: May.

In late May, nearly two months after the initial launch, Nintendo plans on deploying a sizable firmware update that will add the digital shop functionality, along with the ability to browse the web and transfer purchased DSiWare titles to the new system.

Why the delay? Nintendo is spending extra time to get it right, pointing to the faults it made with the Wii and DSi shop channels. In that regard, Iwata called the eShop a “drastically redesigned” avenue. more »

Nintendo: DSiWare Content Transferable To 3DS

Posted by Mike Bendel on September 29, 2010 @ 1:21 am

Are you a DSi adopter considering a 3DS purchase? This should put your mind at ease, especially if you’ve invested heavily in DSiWare: a just-released spec sheet from Nintendo indicates that digital wares can be transferred over to 3DS from a DSi or DSi XL. While Nintendo offered up no details on how this will actually work, chances are a firmware update will add in the functionality.

Nintendo’s said last July that it was making a concerted effort towards revamping its image in the online space. This is a step in the right direction for digital distribution transactions, we’d reckon.

There’s a few caveats. For some, the transition may not go completely smoothly as Nintendo warns that certain software is unable to function on the 3DS, presumably due to hardware incompatibilities. Beyond that, there is a set limit as to how many times a piece of content can be transferred. Admittedly, both are minor quibbles, especially when you consider the DSi currently offers no way to move over data to another unit.

Cave Story DSiWare Bound

Posted by Mike Bendel on September 22, 2010 @ 5:06 pm

Studio Pixel’s exploration-heavy platformer Cave Story seems like the perfect fit for DS, or DSiWare to be more specific. It’s time to rejoice, as according to a table of contents list scanned in from the latest issue of Nintendo Power magazine, the title is indeed DSiWare bound.

Apart from the ToC, scans of said magazine have yet to hit the scene, so details are scare. Regardless, Cave Story + DS oozes win. After seeing the excellent homebrew port on PSP, we’re only surprised it’s taken this long. That said, a homebrew demo did hit DS awhile back — but unfortunately never materialized in full.

Nintendo To Revamp Digital Distribution Approach With 3DS

Posted by Mike Bendel on July 12, 2010 @ 1:52 pm

Nintendo’s approach to digital distribution is one of mixed opinions. While there’s no shortage of content on the company’s DSiWare and WiiWare services, the available offerings aren’t exactly promoted well. Browsing store pages on either service is nowhere as intuitive as it is on Xbox Live or PSN, at least in our experience.

Not one to shy away from its faults, Nintendo has admitted its online efforts have been lacking as of late, leaving many to question when change is coming.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata hopes the company will rectify this “situation” beginning with the release of its 3D-touting handheld successor, the 3DS. Take it away, Iwata: more »

Cosmos X2 DSiWare Bound

Posted by Mike Bendel on June 23, 2010 @ 11:24 pm

Update: We caught up with Saturnine’s Edward Di Geronimo earlier today, who told us that “development is finished,” further noting that the company is gearing up to release Cosmos X2 later this year.

Saturnine Games today let us know that its 2D shoot em’ up Cosmos X2 is slated to hit Nintendo’s DSiWare service. A horizontal-scrolling space shooter, the title features a dual weaponry mechanic, allowing players to switch between two weapon systems at any given time.

In a strategic twist, the operational state of your spaceship correlates directly to weapon usage. Exhausting both energy meters will result in a quick and sudden death. Staying alive is essentially a balancing act, which certainly adds to the tension while also occupied with gunning down dozens of extraterrestrial foes. Your inactive weapon recharges while not in use, absorbing energy from fallen foes.

There are three distinct weapon systems to choose from, all of which are detailed below: more »

Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop Hits DSiWare This April

Posted by Mike Bendel on March 22, 2010 @ 12:47 pm

Namco Bandai today announced that Mr. Driller’s DSiWare outing is headed stateside. Entitled Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop, this localized release is essentially a straight port of its Japanese counterpart, released shortly following the DSi’s debut last year.

Featured are a number of additions that extend and enhance the frantic block-busting experience, including a Dristone mode in which players drill through stone-laden labyrinths, collecting artifacts that are said to give “distinct advantages” along the way. In all, over 40 stages await, each presenting the classic 2D puzzle gameplay of yore in a dual-screen fashion. more »

DSi XL Pegged for 2010 Release In North America, Europe

Posted by Mike Bendel on October 29, 2009 @ 1:52 pm

The DSi LL is heading to North American and Europe under a slightly more identifiable moniker — the DSi XL. XL, obviously standing for extra large. Official word from Nintendo is that the unit will offer a screen 93% larger than the current DS Lite, coupled with a better view angle, a jumbo-sized stylus, and unspecified preinstalled Nintendo DSiWare software.

It’s slated to hit “first quarter calendar year of 2010.” No word on pricing yet, but expect it to carry a premium like its Japanese counterpart, which will retail for approximately 1100 more yen over that of the standard DSi model.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks On Track for December 7

zeldaspirittracks
In a press release detailing its holiday lineup, Nintendo revealed that DS title The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is on track for a December 7 release in North America.

While story details are still shrouded in mystery, the title features an cel-shaded art style fondly reminiscent of Phantom Hourglass. Apart from the added element of stylus driven controls, gameplay is largely akin to traditional Zelda efforts, this time with an added emphasis on exploration as Link guides a cannon-wielding steam engine.
