With the advent of the PSN video download service, which offers movies formatted for both the PSP and PS3, we thought UMD movie offerings were a done deal. Looks like we were wrong.

Speaking to Video Business, Sony marketing director John Koller revealed that the company plans to keep the format alive, releasing at least five high-profile movies on UMD each quarter. This time around, they’ll be priced affordable too — from $9.99 to $14.99, which is at least $10 less than the price of UMD movies years ago.

We want to provide a legal offering from the studios, … and it’s an easier conversation to have with them now,” said John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America. “There’s a lot of positive momentum with the PSP.

Still, with the video download service, I say why bother? Then again, there’s always people that stray away from using digital-based distribution services for various reasons, so perhaps this is good news for them.
