SNES9xTYL Plus Beta

Posted by x3sphere on May 13, 2007 @ 5:35 pm

It sure has been awhile since Yoyofr and Laxer3a’s last update to their very impressive SNES emulator for PSP, but it looks like the wait has been worth it. Yoyofr just announced days ago that he would be resuming development on SNES9xTYL, and now Ruka of NesterJ fame has blasted back into the scene with the release of SNES9xTYL Plus.

The latest SNES9xPlus changelog states that various improvements and optimizations have been made, specifically in the sound processing and media engine department.

This is all very exciting news. I’m sure Thunder, Yoyofr, and Laxer3a will take note of these developments and join ranks with Ruka soon! The future of SNES emulation on PSP is lookin’ good folks.

Ruka does not want the files to be re-distributed on other sites. So in respect to the author, if you want to download the latest build (0032), grab it at his site here.

Apparently a little while ago fruitval over at Yoyofr's forum started working on Snes9xTYL and Yoyofr started updating the source code for it.
Now there is this variant by Ruka...
I wonder if it is using Yoyofr's newly updated code?
I wonder if there will be any collaboration between Yoyofr/fruitval/Ruka?
All I know is that I'm happy to see the project reanimate, so much of the work is already done, now all it needs is a little more speed and better special chip support!

yeah it's really exciting :) I just tested Super Castlevania IV and am happy to report that the game never dips below 60 FPS

other games tested:

Final Fantasy VI - Runs great but still needs frameskip 1 for battles
Lufia II - Now runs perfect! before it would slow down a bit during the initial battle sequence
Secret of Mana - Needs frameskip 1

on average I'd guess there's around a 5 FPS increase. not bad at all for the games that were just a tad off from reaching full speed.

oh my.....this was the only real thing that the emulation part of PSP homebrew was lacking in in my opinion and to see it start up again is really exciting.strangely enough i was looking over the original SNES9x source code the other day just outta interest XD

EDIT: what settings are people using?what would be great would if the emulator could handle fullscreen at 60fps with good compatibilty like gPSP but i can only get megaman 2 to run fullspeed with the 1:1 ratio output...hardly ideal on a screen as big at the PSP's. :(

Well as long as there was no damage to my psp I want to beta try this baby to death :)

x3sphere says:

using the same settings as the author :

FrameSkip: 0
GFX Engine: PSP accelerated + approx. soft.
Video mode: fullscreen
Smoothing: yes
Speed limit switch: no
Frameskip: 0
VSync: no
Render PAL as NTSL: yes
Ganma correction: 0
Screen calibration: default
Show FPS: yes
Clockspeed: 333 MHz

weird that making it fullscreen slowed the game down for you.. could be an issue with just Mega Man. with the games I tested above fullscreen mode had no impact on FPS.

edit: well I just tested X2 and X3 on full screen, both run full speed except X2 slows down in the first boss battle as usual.

MenaceInc says:

redownloaded the 0032 build and set it to those settings and now getting full speed on X2 but theres some tearing in the graphics....hardly desireable and i know its being fussy but stuff like that can make a game unplayable for me :(

just a pity considering i have Maverick Hunter X,Megaman X4,X5 and X6 for POPS and Megaman Zero 1,2,3 and 4 for GBA as well as all the NES Megaman games with NesterJ.....haha,no points for guessing i like Megaman.... :D

also, just wondering but what score did you get for X2 in the top left?...mine stopped at 1384.

EDIT: found some random info about X2 and X3....

"C4, a custom Capcom chip used only in Megaman X2 and X3. It’s a sprite scaler/rotator/line drawer/simple maths co*processor chip used to enhance some in*game effects."

dunno how relevant that is but since its emulated in the original snes9x i guess its in the TYL one as well :)

x3sphere says:

mine was around 1350. it's different every time.

Also you can get rid of the tearing by enabling vsync, at the cost of some speed.

MenaceInc says:

yea the Vsync helped but...i dunno...theres something not quite right....just slight slowdown at random times.also the score took a hit down to 1118 with it on... :

ah well....hopefully there'd be a version of it full speed with sound for nearly all games....althoug its a pity that starfox will NEVER get to 100%... :(
