Skype PSP Slim Only Due To RAM Usage

Posted by x3sphere at January 7, 2008, 3:06 pm

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head of corporate communications Nick Sharples has confirmed that the decision to make Skype a PSP Slim-only feature was made due to the fact that the Slim model has 64MB internal RAM, compared to original model’s meager 32MB.

Although PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 are identical in basic functions, there are differences in hardware specifications to some extent and for that reason, PSP-2000 may differ in features from PSP-1000. We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series

Hah. Tell that to the noobz team. Sony's just trying to give the Slim another feature that Phat users who want the feature might shell out the cash for a Slim.

TimTiger says:

Well to be fair noobz can produce a lighter phone system since unlike $ony they dont have to put alot of high graphics and advertising in their programs.

Kwipper says:

And here I was thinking about going to purchase a slim, then I read the comments. =) Go Noobz!

Noobz FTW!!!

That really is how the world works XD

told you :P

Whoever talked to the press probably misunderstood - it's not RAM that is in short supply but FLASHRAM (NAND Flash on the PSP). We all know that the NAND is almost full (on the phat) and that D_A has had to delete certain things (like Korean fonts) to get his changes to fit in the NAND. There simply isn't room in the NAND for the Skype code, and Sony does NOT want to release a version that runs off the memstick.

MenaceInc says:

ah...fair enough...then i guess i was wrong.but i could understand about how there's hardly any room.was trying to try out a few custom XMB's the other day and it was annoying trying to free up space....

phentex says:

it would have been rubbish anyway their saying RAM is a problem : Skype isn't even out that they were already boasting about futur psp games possibly skype enabled. The reason the slim even existed being mainly NAND space shortage and cutting edge games needing more RAM (>32Mb), it would have basically meant that the game part of skype enabled games would potentially have to run withing

phentex says:

... which leads me to wonder why the damn don't they store apps such as skype on the MEM STICK !!! instead of the NAND....

frosty5689 says:

Um... they're talking about ram size not the size of the flash memory....the 32mb RAM probably wasn't enough to load the application, but it doesn't make any sense for skype to take up that much memory.(assuming the normal xmb doesn't even take 20% of the 32mb).

MenaceInc says:

Chilly says it's not the RAM and he would know a lot more about the psp than me or a lot of people i know so i'd believe him.
