Rumor: PSP2 Nixes UMD, Has 1GB RAM

More details on Sony’s next-generation PSP successor — the PSP2 — are trickling out. Citing sources that met with Sony during the Tokyo Game Show, Kotaku reports that the PSP2 will nix the oft-criticized UMD format with optional Memory Stick storage, much like the PSPgo before it.

If that’s the case, Sony’s plans to distribute games via retail channels remain unknown. Perhaps they’ll forgo physical media entirely.

Additionally, Sony remains undecided as to what “the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2.” As far as hardware specifications are concerned, the PSP2 will pack a punch, allegedly. Sources say that it will boast 1GB of RAM, which is double that of Xbox 360.  Certainly jives with earlier talk, namely from Mortal Kombat exec producer Shaun Himmerick, who touted the handheld as “a pretty powerful machine.” There’s still no concrete word on the associated CPU and GPU specs, however.

These same sources also say that the device will pack dual analog sticks, a bigger screen capable of HD output, and rear touch panel controls.

Don’t expect the rampant speculation to evoke a response out of Sony, other than “no comment.” Sony is prepping for a release late next year, we’re told, which means an E3 2011 announcement is likely.
