Rumor: PSP-4000 An Aesthetic Revamp, Has Sliding Screen

Posted by x3sphere on February 23, 2009 @ 11:34 am

Citing a well-placed source, VG247 is reporting that the PSP-4000 is indeed in development, echoing previous comments made by Eurogamer late last year.

This time, said sources offered a bit more in the way of details on the supposed fourth PSP hardware revision, revealing that it will be completely revamped aesthetically. One of the changes is a front-sliding screen. Inside, though, it’ll still be based on the same tech – meaning this is not PSP2.

An announcement regarding the PSP-4000 is expected to be made in the coming months, during either GDC or E3. The photo above is only an artistic representation of what the new PSP might look like, not the real thing, obviously.

The dual analogue stick might be a bit handy for FPS, but overall I think the screen might come off in one or two falls.

It would be nice if it had a sliding screen, but what it would have under it should be real nice. Like maybe a keypad or something like that, if it housed controls i would buy it if it had a second analog stick, but if it stuck with just one analog stick and no major revisions in the button department then ill stick with a 2000.

I think it looks pretty sweet glad i didnt get a psp-3000 haha
although it could be a while before dat thing comin out

Hydraspun says:

I'm pretty sure I've seen this picture before...one of the usual bogus fan-made images. And it wouldn't have two analog sticks either (no PSP game supports that, obviously).

What Sony needs to do is start from scratch with the PSP2. Call it PSP-Blu or HDPSP (I don't know, I don't make up the names) and let it have a mini version of the Blu-Ray format as the proprietary media, forget UMD and that nonsense, and have an HD-compliant, auto-light level/glare-adjust display. People who want backwards-compatibility will be able to download the old PSP games onto the PSP's solid state hard-drive off the updated PS Store over Wireless-N connections, or sync them through their PCs. The PSP2 should have much better (and louder) speakers, two analog sticks (for the love of God, more ergonomic design, and some form of built-in screen protection (like a flip cover that folds backwards and also provides grip when playing.

It would probably be pretty costly, and perhaps bulky, but I would DEFINITELY buy one of these babies...if only.

Hydraspun you certainly set some high expectations on what the psp2 / psp4000 should have. What your saying is like building a miniture version of a ps3 like really really small portable ps3.

PR0fessor Burnt says:

they could make games that use both though...

MenaceInc says:

x3sphere said this and yet people are still commenting on the pic... :

Personally, I think the move away from UMD is a wise choice considering that flash media is really cheap to include nowadays.
With the media functions of the PSP though, I think it would be great if they included a significant amount of storage such as 128gb.
It would push the price up quite a bit though unfortunately.

jx233 says:

They should have two PSP packages available at launch:

PSP-4000 V1: UMD still there.

PSP-4000 V2: UMD removed, and flash memory is substituted.

anyone catch my vibe?

PR0fessor Burnt says:

or an option to but umd games into flash memory or something like that
