PSP Weekly Sales Hit 100K, Nearly Double DS

Mere weeks after the release of Monster Hunter 2nd G and the PSP is still managing to maintain its clear dominance in the weekly Japanese sales charts, according to data from marketing research firm Media Create.

For the week ending May 4, the PSP edged past the 100,000 mark in unit sales. Its rival, the Nintendo’s DS, sold 52,542 units during the same time period. That’s nearly less than half of what the PSP sold. But even with these impressive numbers, we can’t imagine that Nintendo is worried much, considering the DS has already sold through 22 million units across Japan, compared to 9 million PSPs.

As usual, the full list of hardware sales can be found after the break.

* PlayStation Portable 100,870
* Wii 71,518
* Nintendo DS Lite 52,542
* PlayStation 3 10,177
* PS2 8,802
* Xbox 360 1,725

Well the numbers I post are always legit. Media Create is one of the largest sales tracking services in Japan.

I'd expect that sometime soon, DS sales will hit the saturation point and start dropping. The games will still do well, indicating that system isn't dying, just that the market is saturated. At that point, the PSP can start making up ground in the market. We might be seeing signs of that here... just have to wait to see if the trend (PSP sales > DS sales) continues.

If the sales of PSP is becoming higher than DS it'll also be a sign to the developers to make more good games for PSP =)
