PSP Turns Five In North America, The Best Is Yet To Come Says Sony

Today marks a significant milestone for the PSP in North America, representing its fifth anniversary. Shifting over 17 million units in the region alone, the PSP has made a lasting impact on the portable space since its 2004 inception. Like any platform, the PSP has endured its fair share of ups and downs but throughout it all remains a force to be reckoned with, four hardware revisions and dozens upon dozens of firmware updates later.

Many would agree that momentum has slowed down since last year, with the UMD-less PSPgo launching to mixed reactions. Despite it all, Sony marketing VP Peter Dille says “the best is yet to come,” presumably hinting towards E3 reveals.

With titles like Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on the horizon, we’re inclined to agree that the PSP still has plenty of life in it. Given Nintendo’s recent announcement of a DS successor, it’ll be interesting to see how Sony responds. As far as we’re concerned, they could continue expanding the PSP’s software catalog at this point or take the new hardware route. It’s a decision not to be taken lightly with a 50 million-plus install base out there.

Happy birthday PSP!
