PSP Hard Drive Not Looking Likely, But Still “Possible”

Speaking in a recent interview, SCEE prez David Reeves was quizzed over the possible inclusion of a built-in primary storage device for PSP, such as a hard drive.

In contrast to a couple years ago, Reeves was less than enthusiastic about it but still admitted that the inclusion of such a device is “possible,” further noting that a hard drive would be introduced “later rather than sooner” – if at all. Given there is a possibility, Reeves was also asked for a possible timeframe as to when we might see the device. His response?

There is no timeframe. I stand by what I said. It is possible, yes, to have a fixed hard drive or flash memory. But what’s happened is, the rate at which memory stick prices have come down have surprised everyone.

While not definite, Reeve’s attitude towards a built-in hard drive accentuates that Sony has thrown out the idea of including one in a later hardware revision – or even the PSP2. With Memory Stick prices falling drastically over the past year, it makes sense – adding an internal device would add considerable weight to production costs and in turn would make the PSP more expensive for everyone.

How much extra weight could it possibly add to the PSP? Another device to yet suck more battery power.
Don't see it happening or a reason a HD is necessary until the PSP is capable of PS2 emulation
and titles could be purchased at playstation store.

Might see a hard drive or a Solid State Disk (SDD) to run PSN Titles on the PSP-4000.

Juliet says:

Can't it be a as a peripheral like camera or GPS?

angelsniper45 says:

Well if the harddrive was a peripheral, then it would be a memory stick, which of course are already compatible, and couldnt be better. If they are working on a hard drive, it would be internal, maybe only up to 6 gigs if im correct? Or would it possible be more?

Also, it would be cool if you could upgrade the hardware in the psp like how you do in computers, add more RAM, better cpu, video cards etc etc. If sony could pull this off, it would be a breakthrough for the psp. But, that would probably mean more security and more firmwares that cant be hacked. So in a way, its only a win for official users.

Juliet says:

Yeah, you're right, memory slot has already been built-in. No need to add another peripheral.

Adding some hardware would be great but i don't think they'd be basic components like CPU or GPU. Upgrading them can be technically impossible for a console, esp. a handheld. Also, i think that's an advantage for the consoles. You don't need to upgrade your system every year to play the latest games smoothly. I heard about some Sega Genesis games having extra RAM in their cartridges like Phantasy Star series. But how can it be done for PSP?

Acerthief says:

Exactly.
I'd rather pay a bit more on CPU/GPU and RAM, as sticks are cheap enough and the harddrive would be uneccessary.

askoman says:

Hi all!

It still exists an external portable HDD for the PSP, it's the Witchains SPS and you can find it on ebay.

It allows direct play of files, not like the other OTG that you have to copy to the MS.

cheers!
