Sales tracking firm NPD Group has released its software and hardware sales for the month of August, heralding the latest installment in EA’s long-running licensed football franchise — Madden NFL ’11 — as the best-selling software offering.

Boasting a combined total of 1.8 million units shifted across Xbox 360 and PS3, nothing else came close. Super Mario Galaxy 2, which has stood its ground on the charts for the fourth consecutive month, ranked third with 124,600 units sold.

On the hardware front, only PS3 saw an increase in unit sales over the previous month. Every other platform took a hit. Year-over-year revenue across the entire video game sector was down 10 precent, reflecting a figure of $818.9 million dollars, down from $910.3 million last year.
