Today, Capcom announced that its ridiculously popular RPG Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G has shipped over two million copies in Japan. I said it was bound to happen.

For a perspective on just how popular the game is, the original Monster Hunter Portable 2nd has shipped 1.8 million copies in Japan since its release on February 22, 2007. MHP 2nd G surpassed that number within a month.

- Much-coveted milestone makes it one of Japan’s top games -

Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) is pleased to announce that “Monster Hunter Freedom 2G” for the PlayStation®Portable (PSP®) has shipped 2 million units in Japan.

“Monster Hunter Freedom 2G” has become a runaway success thanks to the introduction of exciting new gameplay elements along with the ability to transfer data over from the previous entry in the series, “Monster Hunter Freedom 2″. This hot seller surpassed all expectation with its speed in reaching the 2 million mark, and has become an instant hit with fans of the series while also attracting a wealth of new users eager for this exciting entertainment experience. Capcom plans on offering downloadable quests and holding special Monster Hunter events to thank these fans for their support and to attract new users to the exciting world of Monster Hunter.

The “Monster Hunter” franchise is a series of hunting action games centered on epic battles with giant monsters set within a fantastic natural setting. “Monster Hunter Freedom 2G” gives friends the chance to hunt together using the PSP®’s ad hoc mode, and Capcom is grateful that it has been so well received by PSP® owners. Since the release of the first Monster Hunter title in 2004 for the PlayStation®2, the series has sold a total of 7.4 million units (as of April 24, 2008) and is one of our most valued titles at Capcom.

As always, we at Capcom will continue to strive to develop new and original games that appeal to a broad audience around the world while expanding our properties for multiple platforms. We believe that by bringing the “Monster Hunter” series to multiple platforms, it will help the franchise reach an even greater number of users eager to experience its unique gameplay.

Cheezeball99 says:

Are they even GOING to release it here?:confused1: I assume they are, but is there any word on any sort of proposed release window?

x3sphere says:

Not yet. But all of the previous entries in the series were released here so I'd say it's only a matter of time.

I really wish they would add infrastructure support though. Would make the series more popular here IMO. It's different in Japan because so many people walk around outside with their PSP, so finding someone to play with isn't that hard.

Cheezeball99 says:

I completely agree. It's fairly foolish on their part, and their reason wasn't very valid either. >.>

They find that they make more money in the Japan market, so they only take opinions of Japanese consumers. Lol.
