May NPD: Nintendo Leads Hardware Sales, PS3 Edges Past 360

The NPD Group has released its North American retail software and hardware sales figures for the month of May. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo managed to hold onto its seemingly impenetrable throne for yet another month, leading by more than comfortable margins in both console and handheld hardware sales.

Further proving that Grand Theft Auto IV has had little to no impact on console hardware sales, Xbox 360 figures were down compared to the previous month. Comparatively, PlayStation 3 sales edged past the 360 this month by more than 20,000 units.

On the software front, Take-Two and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV led the pack with 871,300 units sold throughout May. The Wii edition of Mario Kart wasn’t far behind, pushing an impressive 787,400 units. Wii Fit took third place with 687,700 units sold.
