Itagaki: Fun And Interesting Gameplay Trumps Technical Strength

With his obsession of over-the-top “physics” in Dead or Alive, Valhalla Games boss Tomonobu Itagaki has always been a technical geek of sorts. Departing from Tecmo, however, has signaled a shift in his creative vision. Speaking to Famitsu, Itagaki noted that graphical prowess should take a backseat to elements that make a game “fun and interesting” to play:

The era of pursuing technical strength has ended. From here on out, we should pursue what makes games interesting and fun.

That statement comes in stark contrast to his Tecmo years, when Itagaki made the Xbox 360 his lead platform based purely on the basis of what’s under the hood. With less of a focus on the technical side of things, perhaps this is a hint that future efforts from Valhalla will not exclusively target high-def consoles.
