Update: Flash Spacer v2.5

Posted by x3sphere at April 11, 2009, 3:32 am

Update: That was quick: another feature-enhancing update to Flash Spacer has been released. The latest build adds support for removing the “dic” file folder to further save on space and now automatically creates a backup of deleted files on the Memory Stick.

Homebrew developer alex_e has released an update to Flash Spacer, a utility designed for removing the built-in Location Free player and Camera feature from PSP firmware, useful for saving flash memory space on Phat units. This build aims to streamline, adding an easy-to-use menu interface and the ability to remove the Camera option. Additionally, a bug that prevented the creation of backups from a directory other than PSP/GAME has been fixed.

Your first program.. Congratulations!

I already have my location free player removed from my Phat because of 150k add-on :)...

an di don't think i intend to remove it from my slim...

but nice way to start.. ;)

alex_e says:

thank you...
it can only get better, i want to add more to it but i want to add the back-up part first before i add anymore so im trying to find a place where i can learn to flash...

jx233 says:

Good work alex_e! +rep added for developing an app. :D

Also for a suggestion, you should add a disclaimer to the app; so if anyone bricks their PSP, it will not be your fault.

alex_e says:

okie doke, good idea, but i thought it werent neccessary just yet because it doesnt trouch any vital files just yet, but i will do, you can never be to safe.

jx233 says:

Ok, good now everything is good with the disclaimer in place.

Also, will this be open source or will you release the source in the future?

alex_e says:

well i'll send you the source if you want it as we have a trust in our team, lol, but it will be open source once im finished with it so everyone can benifit.
:)

jx233 says:

Nah, send it another time. I'll need it only for education purposes. But you can keep it for now.

alex_e says:

ya sure, i can quickly comment it for ya, i dont mind tbh, or do u want it when its juicy
lol8)

jx233 says:

No keep it for now. I can wait, and I am working on other stuff at the moment.

The link on the Front Page does not work.

x3sphere says:

That's because the attachment link was removed/changed. I've fixed it now, though.

jx233 says:

Thank you. :w00t:

mortalinstincts says:

the current backing up doesn't back-up the whole lflash?

btw... congratulations for v2 :)

alex_e says:

@mortalinstincts

no it doesnt, only the files that are going to be removed are backed up.
i was just gonna release V2.5 but it will go on hold while i have look into implenting the whole lflash back-up.
my guess is that it will probably be implented in a 2.6.

jx233 says:

Good work alex_e! :w00t:

A suggestion I have for Flash Spacer is to backup and restore function for the PSN settings found in flash2.

alex_e says:

have a look at arnolds thread
http://www.lan.st/showthread.php?t=1959

jx233 says:

Well, somehow Hellcat has managed flash2 access. Wierd, that others can't.

alex_e says:

yh, i think im almost there, i just call something.
im just gonna compile it now and see if i write access
;)
UPDATE: didnt even compile, i'll do some more research, i mighjt just release 2.5 as it is,
it removes the DIC folder saving a total of about 3mb :)

jx233 says:

Good luck.

You're releasing so much stuff. You are one dedicated homebrew developer.

One day, you might make your own CFW.

alex_e says:

:)
my own CFW, i dont think so, hellcat was clever about it

i might upload V2.5 later on, its much more neater that V1 and V2.

jx233 says:

Go ahead with V 2.5.

Also, your CFW could be called X.XX AE.

alex_e says:

okay, it will be up in 30 minutes, i like the X.XX AE :D
i take it you like flash spacer?

i got to take care of the readme

MASSIVE UPDATE:
I GOT WRITE ACCESS TO FLASH2!
im going to flash somemore files to see.
what am i copying for the psn details?

MASSIVE UPDATE 2

i have 100% write access to flash2

angelsniper45 says:

Very nice!! Did you use cygwin on compiling the eboot? if so, i got some code i want to compile but cygwin is stupid and doesnt want to install the toolchain.

alex_e says:

err, no...
cygwin caused to many problems and when it was finally installed it didnt work. lol
i use visual basic 2008 and the pspsdk, works like charm.
what code are you trying to compile?

angelsniper45 says:

my nand currency project, ill email it to you tommorow, so vb works fine with pspsdk? I have the full version of vb. might give that a go instead of cy.

alex_e says:

yup, be sure to dl the pspsdk for windows and tick the box that says visual basic

thexile says:

Just a quick question. Suppose the features are remove with Flash Spacer, will one by able to upgrade to a new firmware successfully?

mortalinstincts says:

there should be no problem as the update will flash new files...

however if Flash Spacer starts removing files from flash1, then you might see some BSoDs, but then thats up to alex_e...

alex_e says:

Bsod's? Blue screen of death?
@ theexile currently flash spacer only deals with flash0, if you remove anything from your flash0 you will still be able to install a new firmware...
there wont be a release for sometime as im dealing with a problem found in the v3 version....
it wont assign flash0 anymore so im trying to figure out why...

mortalinstincts says:

yeah.. playing with your flash1 may give you a BSoD, which in turn will force you to format your flash1...

thexile says:

Thanks all for the replies. Will give this program a try.

alex_e says:

Updated to V3 :)

alex_e says:

Updated to V3.5 :)

DanyBoss says:

Hey guys, i have a bit of a problem here, can't i restore the changes i made (by deleting the web browser, and location free player)?

i want the web browser back...

Please answer, im freaking out!!!

alex_e says:

first off, you should be more careful on what press, you may brick your PSP one day.
to restore the files you can do one of two things.
1) the noob friendly way is to use hellcats recovery flasher and install a NEW CFW, NOT OFW.
2) manually restore the flash backup made at startup.

may i ask why you want the location free player back and everything else?

DanyBoss says:

Not the location free player, but the browser.

lol, thanks the hellcats recovery flasher did the trick, i already had a backup. xD

You should make an option to decide what to delete from flash.

alex_e says:

okay, thanks for the feedback, i'll think about adding it in to the next version.

i have released the final release, check it out here
