Firmware 6.20 Save Game Exploit Surfaces, Works On PSPgo

Yet another PSP save game exploit has surfaced, this time to the credit of wololo and n00b81. Adapted from m0skit0 and ab5000’s “half-byte” loader, it takes advantage of a user mode vulnerability found in the Patapon 2 demo — which in a bit of an ironic twist, came pre-installed on PSPgo launch units here in the US.

Unlike the majority of PSN demos, this particular one is not laced with any DRM that ties it to a specific unit. Meaning, even if Sony pulls it from the PlayStation Store, go owners on firmware 6.20 can still take advantage of it.

We’re told the exploit was “leaked” early as a result of mistrust issues between wololo and an individual he had been collaborating with — malloxis, whose alias is listed on the credits. Drama aside, it is only a proof of concept right now, showing off a “Hello World” backdrop when executed.

Further development may lead to an eLoader, which in theory would allow existing homebrew code of the user mode variant to be run on firmware 6.20. Additionally, in response to the leak, wololo has launched an SVN inviting likeminded developers to contribute.

Those wanting to try the exploit out on their PSP can download the Patapon 2 demo and associated save game files below.
