EA Responds To Fox News “Se”XBOX Segment

Earlier this week, a segment on FOX News hosted by Martha MacCallum featured guest Geoff Keighley of Spike TV and talk show host Cooper Lawrence in a debate concerning the love scene shown in Xbox 360 title Mass Effect.

Controversy arose when FOX News outlandishly claimed that the game includes “full digital nudity and sex” and was being marketed to kids and teenagers, which is completely untrue considering that the game received an M rating from the ESRB. Suffice to say, Keighley did a great job at defending the game but FOX News, arrogant as usual, did not bother to retract their claims.

EA responded to said claims today, rightfully asking FOX to correct the record on Mass Effect. You can read the letter, in full, after the jump. Must say that I am totally with EA on this one.

Ms VanHorn,

I’m writing to request a clarification of serious errors FNC made in a story which aired about the video game Mass Effect. (See attachment) As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect.

Errors include the following:

Your headline above the televised story read: “New videogame shows
full digital nudity and sex.“

Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots – a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It’s also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.

FNC voice-over reporter says: “You’ll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex.”
Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.

FNC reporter says: “Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers.”
Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature – appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

Other sources used in the segment made similar incorrect statements about the game. Judging by the inaccuracy of their comments, they have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales.

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn’t a legal threat; it’s an appeal to your sense of fairness. We’re asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

Sincerely,

Jeff Brown
Vice President of Communications
Electronic Arts, Inc.

Right on EA! That was actually a really impressive letter the way they clearly outline fact from false and showed that what's in Mass Effect is no worse than the TV. The Fox network is pretty famous for shows that air such explicit sex. While the letter was well written and the tone was quite humble, Fox will never correct it. I mean come on, do you believe that a network that airs a news program with the segment "Se" Xbox will take an adult attitude and correct it's mistakes? I'm surprised that Jack Thompson isn't a reference in this story. Maybe he is the new owner of the Fox network cause this is right up his ally. Shame on you Fox.

I just took the time to watch the news segment itself and just have to laugh. I mean there was no control in that debate between Geoff and Cooper. They lash out at video games (shocking huh?) and then give they segment a whole 7 mins...wow! It's not like this is the infamous 'Hot Coffee' scandal from GTA or anything like the simple and easy to access (and INTERACTIVE) sex scenes found in the God Of War series. It's when people have segments like this without really knowing anything that I get pissed. The best thing Geoff said was, "Cooper, have you played Mass Effect?". She's like "no but studies say"...you cannot judge a game based on something you heard in today's world. Things are often taken the wrong way or inaccurate statements are made like this whole interview. Pathetic on fox's part. I loved how they insult the ESRB, "these people should have their head's examined". Laughs. Ignorant people make me understand why no one watches the news anymore.

That segment really does make my stomach hurt with anger... I mean, ARE YOU F@#$ING SERIOUS!?!? It just pisses me off so much to hear what they said... So F@#$ING IGNORANT and SO F@#$ING TYPICAL of people who don't play games... I feel sorry for Geoff, he did the best he could, though. I mean, seriously, on the one hand it actually made me laugh at how ignorant both of the others were about the subject at hand, but yet so UNRIVAL-ING-LY PISSED that the uninformed are clearly going to believe them, as opposed to listening to Geoff; IT'S LIKE GETTING MEDICAL ADVICE FROM A BUM INSTEAD OF A DOCTOR! Hearing her laugh at him when he asked if she'd played it... AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!:cursing: Plus, IT'S GODDAMN SIDEBOOB! S-I-D-E-B-O-O-B! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A/O FOR SIDEBOOB!? YOU CAN TYPE "BOOB" INTO GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH WITH SAFESEARCH ON AND GET FAR WORSE THAN THAT! It's just inexcusable how biased that all was.

MenaceInc says:

haha, cheeze just reminded me of a episode of family guy that had peter making his own tv network and had a programme on it dedicated to sideboobs....

also, yea, just tried typing in boob into google there was quite a bit there.... :|

Cheezeball99 says:

And that's what I was referencing:laugh: Good memory!:p

"And that sideboob? That's not that attractive, or at least I'd hope not, because that's MY sideboob. Thank you, and good night."
