Direct PSP Store Launches This Fall, PSP-PS3 Connectivity Expands

This fall should prove to be an exciting time for all PSP owners. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan today announced that the long-awaited direct PSP store will launch later this year via a firmware update. Designed as a native PSP application, the store will be accessible straight from the XMB, meaning you’ll no longer have to log-on to your PC to download PSP compatible content from the PS store and transfer it through USB connection.

Additionally, Sony dropped word that owners of a PlayStation 3 will be able to use their console to enable online play in select ad-hoc only PSP titles, such as Monster Hunter 2nd G.

Although we can’t say for certain, expect the aforementioned services to hit all three major territories — North America, Europe and Japan — at the same time, considering that firmware updates have always been released on a worldwide basis in the past.

but the new firmware will prevent the PSP from downgrading!

Ranelar says:

why would online for a psp game be enabled through the ps3 and not through the psp's wifi connection? I always thought games were ad-hoc only because they didn't want to build the infrastructure to support online play. Adding the ps3 as a conduit doesn't eliminate that problem does it? Are all games on the PSN on one massive network? I thought they had dedicated servers for each game?

x3sphere says:

It probably works similar to XLink Kai. The PS3 acts as a tunnel that connects to PSN.

PSN is similar to Xbox Live, in terms of how it is setup. They don't have servers for each specific game. Instead they have a bunch of servers that power the network, and the games simply connect to it.

ic, makes sense. That would be great to play ad-hoc games online, because none of my friends have a psp.
