Datel Lite Blue Tool A Marketing Scam

Posted by x3sphere at January 6, 2009, 8:51 pm

A couple months ago, reports were circulating around the web that Datel had created a battery that would allow PSP-3000 owners to access service mode. Needless to say, we were skeptical of these claims, especially due to the fact that technical specifications behind the battery were kept secret and no one, not even sites affiliated with Datel, had a hands-on report of said battery months after the initial announcement.

Turns out, our skepticism was warranted. Datel has since issued a stealth update to the product listing page for the PSP Lite Blue Tool. Not only has the product name been changed, but what was once promised is now conspicuously absent. According to the page, this particular battery can only enable service mode on PSP-2000 units – and will function as a normal battery on any PSP-3000.

It is our hope that those who bought into Datel’s marketing scheme and placed pre-orders on this battery will promptly be refunded. Again, this whole ordeal only further exemplifies Datel’s utter dishonesty to consumers.

Announcement Due to legal action by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe we are currently not able to fulfil orders for the Lite Blue Tool Battery. Any orders received for this product have not been processed and no charges have been made. We will inform customers about availability of this product when this situation has been resolved.

Customers who wish to purchase a replacement battery for PSP 2000 or PSP3000 should see our Max Power Digital - Universal Mode Battery which is shipping now.

Could be another lie - who knows. It's extremely odd SCEE would bring suit against them for this but not their other service mode batteries. If true, it seems more like a stall tactic to me. There is just no proof that the battery actually exists. Datel could easily make a video of the battery in action to prove its existence, but they haven't done that either.

VEGAN0011 says:

maybe sony have let the PSP phat and PSP slim & lite go as the pandora is already out ,and legal action against Datel for its service tool battery would be pointless as long as the Pandora is around, and are sony really going to take legal action against Datel for the service tool battery when its already been said on exophase that its not datels code, but if it is a scam why do it

That's straight from the Datel sight, which seems fishy.

Whoever wrote this article is an idiot who doesnt do their homework. The correct information follows:

So next time this person should actually do research before writing about what they initially see as a similar battery to the datel lite blue, make up their own information and misinform the gaming society. Very careless and unexceptable.

P.S. The writer of the article even supplied his/her own link to the website to which i got this information from. Don't listen to everything you read on forums.

x3sphere says:

It's not misinformation. That statement was nowhere to be found on the Datel site at the time of writing. Furthermore, Datel did not reply when I asked them for comment, so I went with what I had.

Datel attempted to mislead consumers, that much is clear. This equates to a marketing scam. The original "Lite Blue" link included in my article now redirects to the "Max Power Digital" battery, which looks exactly the same as the Lite Blue tool but only allows for service mode on PSP-2000 units. Coincidentally, the statement is nowhere to be found on that page, you have to navigate over to the main product listing page to find it. And you say this is not misleading?

If Datel was an honest company and cared about its customers they would have redirected that link to a page explaining the situation, not a entirely new battery product that looks the same in an attempt to mislead them into buying an overpriced product. I say overpriced because this particular model costs more than their other service mode batteries, but does not offer any new features.

Also there is no evidence of a lawsuit even happening. Datel says it is fighting a legal battle with SCEE but for all I know this could be a lie. Again they are far from being an honest company, given their past history.

Judging by the tone of your post, I wouldn't be surprised if you work for them.
