Posted by x3sphere at June 26, 2007, 5:25 pm

It’s a great day for PSP owners, first the 3.50 downgrader, and now Strmnnrmn has released the latest build of his N64 emulator for PSP – Daedalus R12!

R12 features a few compatibility fixes, specifically aimed at Goldeneye and Super Smash Bros. However, Strmnnrmn notes that these fixes may affect other games as well. Good news is that the dynarec for Super Smash Bros. has been fixed, and the game runs at a very playable 30 – 40 FPS. Still not full speed, but getting there. Hit the jump for the full changelog and download the new Daedalus build below.

I don't find this to be exciting news at all. I have downloaded every one of Daedalus' N64 Emulator revisions since I first got my PSP and have yet to see a single N64 ROM run even remotely well. So far every new Daedalus Revision (if thats what the R stands for) has made no discernible difference in the ability of the PSP to play N64 roms.

x3sphere says:

Sure, most games are not playable yet. Still you don't think it's exciting that the emulator manages to improve with every release?

Compare running Mario 64 in R1 to R12, you will see a huge difference. It's going to take time before games are running full speed, but hey, at least he is letting us test out each build.

Also, Super Smash Bros. runs quite good with sound off and 2 frameskip.

Cheezeball99 says:

Yeah, seriously, man, don't knock the emulator. That just grinds on me, people complaining about emus 'n' such:mad1:. THEY'RE FREE, c'mon, you have no right complain, man.

canadajames says:

This is a great birthday present. A very great one and just so you know according to what I'm hearing at elast 4 games run close to perfect. This guys working his butt off for free. Like cheese said don't knock things that are free. Try to do better. I'm downloading and trying goldeneye and super smash bros asap. Happy birthday indeed.

RJC4LIFE says:

It's going to be a good day today, I hope OoT and MM run better.

Cheezeball99 says:

Well, not to get offtopic, but happy Bday canadajames!:thumbup1:

roe-ur-boat says:

canadajames says:

thx guys :w00t: having a party week

roe-ur-boat says:

:w00t: Party at CJ's house!!!!!

And now back to the topic. This thing is soooo cool!!!! I tryed Goldeneye for a few mins and it played pretty well.

Chilly Willy says:

I really like how well it's coming along. SM64 is faster now with sound than it was without sound just a few revs back.

Finbaloid says:

I Could Never get Goldeneye to even work with the other revisons!
I always thought tht mario 64 was playable...Dont Be mean about it!

RJC4LIFE says:

Mario plays really good, if the sound ever picks up it would be great.

But seriously, a previous build of (R9 maybe) in regards to Zelda OoT had the graphics working for indoors (shops etc.) but it's still broken for R12..so sad.

I do actually have a dumb question..the exspansion pak issue. Is this a seperate graphic dll or something or is the pak already in the emu or the rom itself? Always wondered.

canadajames says:

I think its something which the emulator emualtes. was a little thing which went into controller for n64 for you to be able to play games like its mem card.

RJC4LIFE says:

Ok, like the goofy little thing for the Dreamcast..

Krelian says:

No, you're describing a memory card.
The expansion ram was the little red block you plugged into the console itself to give it more RAM.
Example: N64 4M RAM Expansion Pack

canadajames says:

O so basically it was something for newer more demanding games in order for them to play smoothly.

Cheezeball99 says:

Indeedily deedily do, canada. Because the N64 could render the stuff, but didn't have enough RAM to store all the textures. But I'm sure they planned all along, or else they wouldn't've made the slot for it in the first place. Stupid marketing ploys.:glare:

canadajames says:

lol most console do that some way or another.

Chilly Willy says:

Funny enough, they ran into the SAME problem SEGA did - the vast majority of console owners will never update their console. It's why Sony puts everything into their console, then trims features as later versions are released. Whatever is the limit of the first console released will be the limit for the majority of games bought.

RJC4LIFE says:

So the expansion pak (equivelant) is already a part of Daedalus? Can the PSP (via Daedalus someday) handle the textures?

I know I ask stupid questions riddled with lame answers but I'm retarted..basically.

x3sphere says:

Daedalus already emulates the expansion pak. Very few games used it though.

Cheezeball99 says:

But the most important one did- PERFECT DARK! :w00t:

MenaceInc says:

has anyone tested out Paper Mario to see whether it works yet?
i would now but i have to get ready for work.would like to know for when i get back, thanks :)

Cheezeball99 says:

I've tried- no, MenaceInc, it doesn't. That is always one of the first ones I check with every rXX release.

banner says:

N64 on the PSP? I pass on this one. Think about it, N64 controls have a different layout!

Krelian says:

Do they?
If you're holding an N64 controller with your left thumb on the analog and your left index finger on the Z button there is no difference on PSP... your left thumb would be on the analog nub and your left index finger on the R button (use it like a Z button). No difference there...
Your right hand has just a little loss... you can plainly see your C buttons where the shape buttons are and still have the R button... you lose the A and B buttons but VERY few games require you to use A, B and all the C buttons... just map A and B to the C buttons you won't use.
Really it's not that big a stretch.

banner says:

I sure im not the only few that disagree with you.

Cheezeball99 says:

Actually, banner, I think you ARE pretty much the only one- I mean, the N64-to-PSP control conversion is fairly natural, it really causes no problems.

x3sphere says:

Yeah, there are no problems with the control conversion. Play Mario 64 or Super Smash Bros., they both transition perfectly to the PSP.

RJC4LIFE says:

Perfect Dark doesn't work for me and I can get to the title screen of Paper Mario but that's about it. I will wait however long it takes for OoT to be fully playable, music and all.
And you can change the .ini config file for the buttons to your liking so the controls aren't a hinderance at all.

sukhi10 says:

The n64 is very cool console its even cooler to play them on psp, The games which are working with good speeds mario 64,forsaken 64,aero gauge, lylat wars this emulator is getting interest each release i hope it will play full speed one day.

pyro007 says:
