Woolworths Dumps HD-DVD In Favor Of Blu-ray

Major UK retail chain Woolworths has announced that it will stop stocking HD-DVD discs in its stores by the end of March. Company execs say the move was prompted over sales of the Blu-ray format outpacing HD-DVD by ten-to-one during the holiday season. The chain believes that strong sales of the PlayStation 3 in Europe has had a lot to do with the success of the format.

The main reason is the success of Sony’s PlayStation 3 machine. Because it plays Blu-Ray discs, there are over three quarters of a million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is nowhere near that number of HD-DVD players around.
