Universal’s HD-DVD Exclusivity Agreement Expires

Might the format war be over way, way sooner than we think? Variety reports that Universal’s exclusivity agreement to back HD-DVD has expired. The contract in question has yet to be renewed. Will they choose to switch over to HD-DVD or go Blu? If the latter, it’d mean that Paramount would be the last studio remaining to back HD-DVD.

If Universal switches over, it’s likely that Paramount will exercise the escape clause in its HD DVD contract, which allows it to release videos on Blu-ray following Warner’s decision to exclusively back the format.

seems to be that blu-ray will win....not sure of the factors why but one tiny one might be that consumers prefer the name blu-ray to HD-DVD :P

hehe.

no doubt if blu-ray win's out then it'll boost ps3 sales considering its one of the cheapest blu-ray players if i remember...

Well HD-DVD players are still cheaper, but only has one Manufacturer of their players "Toshiba". Blu-Ray has many manufactures, with the Exception of LG who choose to make a Dual Player which sucks as heck cant play either format properly.

Also given the bad sales of HD-DVD movies over blu-ray i would think Universal would jump ship to the BR-Disc format. Unless M$ shows them the money, just like they did to Paramount.

Once again people will just buy regular DVD players, for one they're content with the regualar DVD format, two it wont help PS3 sales if studios went Blu Ray, due to the fact that not everyone is a gamer. What good would be a PS3 if it's only used to play blu ray movies, plus the PS3 has a very hard time playing SOME movies. Might get the Second cheapest Blu Ray player with better compatability with the movies. Like look at M$ not many people went out of their way to buy the HD-DVD add on for their 360's.
