Square Enix today announced that it has inked an agreement with Emergent Game Technologies to license the Gamebryo engine for a “yet-to-be-announced project,” which is to play a significant role in Square Enix’s global expansion efforts.

While no details on the title in question were provided, utilizing the Gamebryo engine will help speed up the development process, in turn allowing Square Enix to focus less on technical issues and instead concentrate on design and core gameplay elements.

“Gamebryo offers a flexible framework, allowing us to develop effectively and efficiently for any target platforms,” said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix. “Gamebryo’s engine provides the ability to integrate our internally developed tools into a proven, stable tech solution which allows for more time to be spent on innovative and creative gameplay.”

Details regarding the Gamebryo-project will be unveiled at a later date. The Gamebyro engine has been used in several prominent game releases over the past few years, most notably The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
