Traditionally, Square Enix has neglected to release downloadable content for its large scale epics but things may be changing with the arrival of Final Fantasy XIII. According to a translated recount of an interview with OPM Benelux, game director Yoshinori Kitase notes that there is content that did not make the cut into the final release of FFXIII. Essentially, in order to have a finished product ready by March for the North American audience, Square Enix had to omit this bit of content from the final game.

Spending extra time to add this content would have tacked on several more months of development time, which according to Kitase, did not fall in line with Square Enix’s goal of “releasing the game as fast as possible” in the West. While there’s no word on what the content entails, it sounds fairly sizable. Then again, perhaps not, as one could argue that its contents weren’t significant enough for Square Enix to issue a delay over.

Perhaps most importantly, Kitases further notes that Square is in process of preparing this DLC for a release in Japan, but did not give a specific timeline in regards to when it would drop, only mentioning that it would arrive “a little later” in the West. Considering the source is a  interview translated by a third-party and scans of the OPM issue in question have yet to crop up, we’re a little hesitant to fully put faith in the account. Not to mention, important details can sometimes be lost in translation. File it under rumor for now.
