Reeves: Expect New Consoles By 2013

When will the next console generation begin? It’s a hot topic as of late amidst all the frenzy surrounding Kinect and PS Move. Traditionally, most major platforms have enjoyed a healthy lifecycle that gradually tapered off at around 5-6 years, the point at which a shift in focus occurs.

Popular consensus is that this round of consoles will stick around longer. Former SCEE president and Capcom COO David Reeves agrees.

In an interview with GI.biz, the outspoken exec weighed in on the topic, noting that he feels at least two platform holders will unveil their latest and greatest in 2-3 years time. Not exactly far fetched. In line with expectations, we’d say.

“Two to three years, I reckon so,” said Reeves. He modestly added, “I don’t have any inside information. All the first-parties have got to be working on something.”

Crytek co-founder Cevat Yerli shares the belief that this generation will wrap up and begin anew by 2013. Obviously, the big three are keeping quiet at this point, but in all likelihood planning is already underway.
