PS3 Motion Controller Delayed, Now Slated For Fall 2010

In an announcement that we can hardly call shocking, Sony has decided to postpone the release of its wand-like motion controller attachment to fall 2010. First unveiled at E3 2009, the peripheral was initially slated to hit this spring. Without elaborating on why it was pushed back, SCE president Kaz Hirai chimes in on what’s in store for this newfangled device that aims to deliver “new entertainment experiences” to PS3 owners:

“We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users, ” said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with. We look forward to soon unveiling the exciting software line-up that further expand and define the PS3 platform as the ultimate entertainment system for the home.”

Sounds as if partners simply weren’t ready – and it seems Sony themselves aren’t either, considering a final name for the device still has yet to be pinned down. That said, the signs pointing to a delay were far from subtle. Hopefully the extra development and marketing prep time will translate to a well executed launch with an ample amount of support.
