Happy Birthday: PlayStation 2 Turns Ten

Ten years ago from today, the PlayStation 2 made its debut in Japan. Hard to believe it’s been that long, right? Looking back, the PS2 was home to quite possibly the most diverse library of titles ever witnessed on a video game platform. From big-name RPG epics like Final Fantasy and the occasional quirky effort — Katamari comes to mind — PS2 had it all.

Just a couple years into the console’s lifecycle led owners to believe that the PS2 was something special, especially after being graced with genre-defining titles such as Grand Theft Auto III and Metal Gear Solid 2. While the console race of today is a decidedly closer match, the competition did little to phase the PS2’s success, it was nigh unstoppable.

To date, the PS2 has sold over 140 million units worldwide, cementing its status as the best-selling console of all-time. Matching that figure remains even a lofty goal for the Wii, widely popular as it is. While the PS2 may be nothing more than a distant memory to most of us today, it’s still trucking along, having sold over 300,000 units after the holiday rush in January. Happy birthday PS2!
