Capcom Revises Resident Evil 5 Sales Predictions

Posted by x3sphere at October 1, 2008, 11:00 am

Capcom’s annual financial report, released early last month, projected worldwide Resident Evil 5 sales of 2.3 million. That figure was apparently on the “low end,” though, as producer Jun Takeuchi hopes the title will eventually break the 3 million barrier.

At the low end of the scale, I would say 2 million copies worldwide. I’d like to see it start there and eventually reach 3 million copies. I think users in Europe and America will be particularly pleased with the game’s content.

EA Axes Tiberium Due To Quality Issues

Posted by x3sphere at September 30, 2008, 3:19 pm

Citing quality concerns, EA has axed Tiberium, a squad-based first person shooter set in the Command Conquer universe announced last December. The title was recently delayed into EA’s 2010 fiscal year, but repeated attempts to overcome the design challenges associated with the project have failed, ultimately leading to cancellation.

According to an internal memo passed throughout EA, several of those who were working on Tiberium will be let go from the company. For the rest of the Tiberium team, EA “make every effort to place affected individuals on projects within the studio,” as well as connecting them with other teams inside of EA.

Sony May Stick With Cell Architecture For PS4

Posted by x3sphere at September 30, 2008, 12:58 pm

PS4? It is of course still years away from release, but as with all new hardware, planning begins early on in the development cycle. According to a report from Japanese site PC Watch, Sony is considering to re-use the multicore Cell architecture in the fourth iteration of PlayStation hardware.

While the PS3 was largely criticized as hard to develop for by numerous studios in the first year of its launch, developers are now more experienced in working with Cell. Thus, keeping the same core architecture in place with additional enhancements would be a huge plus.

Additionally, Sony plans to switch over to standard DDR3 memory for the PS4, rather than continue using XDR modules. The move would undoubtedly help save on costs, seeing as DDR3 availability will become more widespread and cheaper over the next couple years due to the impending launch of Intel’s Nehalem platform. more »

Capcom Dates Age of Booty

Posted by x3sphere at September 29, 2008, 2:09 pm

Capcom has sent word that its tactical real-time strategy title Age of Booty, formerly known as Plunder, will hit Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network on October 15 and the 16th, respectively. A PC release will follow soon after on nearly all major digital distribution platforms, including Direct2Drive, Digital River, Metaboli, Impulse, and Steam. Pricing is set at $10, or 800 Microsoft Points for the XBLA folk.

Unlike your typical RTS offerings, Age of Booty is catered towards the casual gamer. The title features a simple control setup, as well as lesser focus on resource gathering and does away with the time-consuming process of base building. With support for 8-way multiplayer over Live or PSN, players take control of a lone pirate ship and set off to capture enemy points.

Kojima: Konami ID Not A Very Good Idea

Posted by x3sphere at September 26, 2008, 6:28 pm

When Metal Gear Online first launched, there were issues. Issues that ultimately resulted in server downtime and a whole lot of unhappy customers. And in the middle of it all was Konami ID, a user registration system designed specifically for MGO, which Konami decided to use instead of seamlessly integrating account management with PSN.

Speaking in a recent interview with 1UP, Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima admitted that the idea of Konami ID “wasn’t a very good one.” more »

Killzone 2 Beta Invites Go Out

Posted by x3sphere at September 26, 2008, 12:56 pm

There’s not a whole lot to say here other than check your email. Word is that invites to the Killzone 2 closed beta test went out today to a very limited number of European PlayStation 3 owners. We don’t recall sign-ups being made specifically for a Killzone beta, so it’s likely that SCEE is choosing folks that applied for their beta test initiative last July. If you signed-up for that, then you probably have a better chance of getting in than the rest of us.

All details regarding the game are under NDA and as such, testers are being asked to keep gameplay impressions to themselves or on Sony Europe’s private beta forums for now.
