Multiplayer In BioShock Infinite Not A Given

The recently announced BioShock Infinite may ship sans a multiplayer component, according to Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine.

Weighing in on game design, Levine says the team has “not made any determinations” in regards to multiplayer, further noting that experimenting in the multi space is a worthwhile venture only if you can separate yourself from the likes of juggernauts — Call of Duty, Halo, and so on. He gave a nod to Valve for pulling this off.

If we do something new — if we do something like Left 4 Dead that has something new to say — people will come to your game. If you don’t, don’t waste your time.

After the shaky reception to multiplayer in BioShock 2, it comes as little surprise that Irrational is pouring all its resources into the single player aspect. Levine brings up a good point — far too many multiplayer titles set out to imitate the top guns rather than embrace and build upon traits specific to their genre. Of course, breaking the mold is not easy but can be done, even in today’s highly-competitive market.
