David Perry Stunned By Marvel MMO Cancellation

David Perry, best known as the founder of Shiny Entertainment, is “stunned” at Microsoft’s decision to drop the cross-platform MMO Marvel Universe Online. If things were done right, Perry believes sales of the title could have surpassed that of World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft sells because Blizzard made it, and Blizzard is a fantastic company, right? The talent at Blizzard is just phenomenal. If you can get a team that’s got the same quality and you have that licence, I’ll take the Marvel licence every time over Warcraft,” he said.

Think about it. Think about how many Spider-Man fans there are in the world, think about all of the Marvel movies that have been coming out one after the other, and all taking serious bucks at the box office.

So why axe the title? Perry notes that many developers believe there is no point in creating a new MMO, as World of Warcraft has grabbed such a large portion of the market. He further speculates that rising development costs may have forced Microsoft to cancel the title.
