Confirmed: PS3 Firmware 2.4 To Feature In-Game XMB, Trophies

Ending a long period of speculation and leaks, Sony finally made it official today. PlayStation 3 firmware 2.4 will bring the much requested in-game XMB access feature, along with the addition of an Xbox Live-esque “Trophies” system.

Though Sony isn’t ready to pin a firm release date on the firmware just yet, previous statements made by Sony UK boss Ray Maguire indicate that the firmware will hit this summer.

Alongside the long-awaited announcement of firmware 2.4, Sony confirmed that 2.36 is due out “soon.” As initial rumors suggested, the update will improve system stability with select PlayStation titles.

But what about playing music from the xmb? Does in game xmb encompass that for sure?

Sony hasn't really elaborated on which sections of the XMB you'll be able to access while in-game yet. I would assume you will be able to at least play music, though.

If any indication of PSP's lackluster update (4.00 FW) is any sign. I'll take this confirmation with a Grain of Salt. Due to the fact that Sony Promises to deliver, but never truly does. Well only time will tell if i'll jump ship and go ahead with the update (although in order for one to use the PS store on the PS3 Sony does force the update upon you). I guess i'll be updating the PS3 anyways when this one hits.


BTW, wasn't the Trophies thing an Exclusive to the @Home thing that Sony was supposed to bring out to the masses AGES ago.

Well, the trophies in home will be the ones we are getting in 2.4 except in full 3d and displayed in a "trophy room". There will be displayed and stuff for certain games that you can get(look up some youtube videos). So yeah the ones you get in Home are exclusive because they are actual objects.
