Confirmed: PlayStation 3 Price Cut, 80 GB Model

Well, well, well… it appears the so-called rumors were indeed true after all. Today SCEA senior director David Karraker confirmed that starting Monday, the current 60 GB model of the PS3 will drop to $499. Though we already we knew this, its nice to hear an official confirmation.

Anyways, better yet is the confirmation of the new PS3 SKU. Karraker says that starting August, an 80 GB model of the PS3 will be available, bundled with a retail copy of the online racing title MotorStorm.

Hard to say if Sony has made a good or bad move here. Public perception is everything, and maintaining a $600 price tag for the “best” model isn’t exactly a smart idea. Yes, Microsoft did a similar thing with the Elite. But is the Elite $600? No.

Watch them drop the 60GB from retail soon, as well. Also, wasn't the original $499 model a 20GB? Then shouldn't the new $599 one be 180GB? from 20 to 60GB was a 200% storage increase for $100 more. This time it's 1/3 (33.3%) more storage for $100 more.

Wow. Sony is still completely ignoring the idea that $599 is just too freaking expensive.
