Cell CPU Goes 45nm In 2009, Cheaper PS3 A Possibility

IBM announced last February that it had managed to shrink the Cell central processing unit found in the PlayStation 3 to 45nm down from 65nm. We now have been given a more precise timeframe as to when these smaller energy saving chips will roll out: 2009. What does it mean for consumers? Initially, not a whole lot, aside from the fact that PS3 units sporting this chips will run a bit cooler and burn less power. For Sony, it means they’ll be saving money on each PS3 produced and in turn, could lead to a possible price cut. Of course, they could also choose not to cut the price so as to increase their profit margin on hardware. Let’s hope that won’t be the case though.

I say sony better do a PS3 price cut, especially before the xmas holidays if they truely want to Sell their system to future gamers (you know those kids that drag their parents to the mall and ask them for this and that for xmas). Also it would even profit them more, then again who knows because bluray players are still too expensive, so it may effect the PS3's pricing anyways (due to it being Blu Ray and all).
