Capcom Rebalancing SSFIITHDR

Capcom’s Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix was originally planned to be a graphical refresh of the original Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, complete with high definition sprites. However, during development, game designer David Sirlin decided that it would be beneficial to do more than just a graphical upgrade and make changes to core gameplay elements.

These changes, as Sirlin details on the Capcom Unity blog, have three major design goals, one to “make the game easier to play,” and two to “make the game even more balanced for tournament play.” Three being the obvious goal of adding fun, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the game’s balance.

On the subject of making the game easier, Sirlin explains that the controls have been greatly simplified. For example, all 3 button combo moves have been changed to 2 buttons and special attacks, like Dragon Punch and the Spinning Piledriver, are now easier to pull off. In tournament play, stronger characters will be slightly nerfed while weaker characters, on the other hand, will be buffed up a bit to reach a tighter balance between characters.

Purists, don’t worry: In addition to the described “Remix” mode, Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix will include an arcade perfect gameplay version of SSF2T with new art and music.
