Blu-ray costs fall, PS3 price cut soon?

Good news for prospective PS3 owners. Sony has said that they are expecting blue-violet laser diodes to drop to around $8 dollars later this June. Add to the fact that Sony has already installed new equipment capable of producing 5 million of these laser diodes, and you get the picture: Blu-ray costs are falling dramatically and production is rapidly increasing to meet demand.
So, what’s in it for us? Well, analyst Michael Pachter seems to think Sony is definitely in a position right now to issue a $100 price drop by mid-year. But will they? No one knows, it really depends if Sony will be making a profit off PS3 sales as a result of the decrease in production costs.
Not to mention the Xbox 360 Elite is heading our way soon, so a price drop now looks to be the perfect move for Sony.
