Corporate mudslinging, gotta love it. Speaking to The Times, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick openly admitted that the company may pull its support on Sony platforms if the adoption rate of PS3 hardware does not pick up anytime soon. Kotick is fed up with pricing of the console and feels the only way to spur sales at this point is a price cut.

They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.” Ask when and he says: “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too.

That’s a loaded statement. Taking into account the weight Activision carries around in this industry, losing them would be a huge blow to any platform holder. Of course, the chances of this happening are incredibly slim, as Sony will almost certainly drop the price within the next year, a move which will no doubt lead to sales picking up. Either way, it’s interesting to see the CEO of a publisher issue such a threat. Probably the first time it has ever happened, at least publicly.
