3D Touting Firmware Update Hits PS3 June 10

The wait is nearly over. After months of dangling the proverbialĀ carrot in front of our faces, Sony has finally pinned down a firm date on the PS3’s next firmware update. You know, the one that’ll add stereoscopic 3D support. It’s due out June 10 and will bring with it several 3D-enabling titles at launch, including Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and PAIN.

According to a press release issued by SCEJ this morning, 3D updates for Wipeout HD and Super Stardust HD will come free for current owners. You’ll have to pony up 300 yen ($3) to access the 3D update for PAIN, however. Sony also plans to distribute a 3D-enabled demo of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift to those who purchase a 3D Bravia HDTV set in the region.

There’s no word yet on if the list of launch titles set to usher in 3D support will differ in North America and Europe. Chances are SCEA and SCEE will issue their own announcement later today. Or tomorrow, if they haven’t woken up from the holiday weekend. We’ll keep you posted.
