Valve Files for ‘DOTA’ Trademark

DOTA

Valve seems to have filed a trademark registration for the characters “DOTA”. This is most likely referencing the popular Warcraft III custom map, Defense of the Ancients (DotA). It is already known that the current designer of the map, IceFrog, was hired by Valve earlier last year and has been working on a yet unannounced project.

The Defense of the Ancients game is so popular that it provided for a free-to-play spin-off title, League of Legends, as developed by Riot Games. Another company however, S2 Games, has taken a more direct approach to cloning the game for the modern era with their latest title, Heroes of Newerth. So is it finally Valve’s time to cash in on this enormous fan base? We’ll just have to wait and see.
