Blizzard Forums To Display Real Name

Blizzard plans to ditch the guise of anonymity on its official discussion forums, announcing that future posts will soon be displayed alongside the user’s real first and last name tied to their Battle.net account.

This comes as part of an effort to “improve the quality of conversations and make the forums an even more enjoyable place for players to visit,” the company noted in a statement. Blizzard feels that hiding behind an alias strips away accountability, giving way to an environment where “flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild.”

The Real ID shift is scheduled to take place on all official StarCraft II forums ahead of the game’s July 27 launch. Changes to the World of Warcraft site and its associated forums will follow near the release of WoW expansion Cataclysm.

This should go over just swell.
